Walter Wood Chip Power Plant

  • Fuel: woodchips
  • Electric power: 50 kW
  • Heating power: 120 kW

Walter is a small-scale wood chip power plant designed for combined heat and power production.

Etusivu Walter powerplant

It is suitable for farms, businesses, properties and local energy production in applications where both the electricity and the heat generated in the process can be utilised.

  • Fuel: wood chips
  • Electrical output: 50 kW
  • Thermal output: 120 kW
  • Fuel consumption: approximately 5.6 m³ of wood chips per day
  • Automation: ABB control system, GSM alarms and remote control

Walter has been developed based on Volter’s previous generations of wood chip power plants.

Electricity and heat from wood chips

Walter produces electricity and heat simultaneously from wood chips. One power plant produces:

Length: 4.8 m | Width: 1.2 m | Height: 2.5 m | Weight: approximately 4.5 t | Construction: steel frame with sheet metal enclosure | Installation: indoors | Fuel: wood chips | Fuel supply: from a separate silo | Fuel consumption: approximately 5.6 m³/day | Automation: ABB programmable logic controller | Remote connectivity: GSM alarms and remote control | Connections: electrical grid, heating network, internet and GSM connection

Walter can be integrated into the site’s existing electricity and heating system. For larger applications, multiple power plants can be operated in parallel.

Who is Walter suitable for?

Walter is designed for applications where electricity and heat are needed simultaneously.

Farms

On farms, the electricity can be used for on-site consumption and the heat, for example, for:

  • production and residential buildings
  • domestic hot water
  • drying
  • other processes requiring heat.

Businesses and industry

In businesses and industrial applications, Walter can produce electricity for on-site consumption and heat for buildings or production processes.

The solution provides the greatest benefit in applications where there is demand for both electricity and heat for a large part of the year.

Properties and local energy production

Walter is also suitable for larger properties and local energy systems where electricity and heat are to be produced on site.

Walter WP – power plant for outdoor installation

Walter WP (Weather Proof) is an outdoor version of the Walter power plant.

It is suitable for sites where a separate power plant building or technical room is not available. The power plant can be supplied as an enclosed outdoor unit, with a high degree of factory completion.

Walter WP is a good option, for example, when:

  • there is no existing power plant room at the site
  • the power plant is to be installed outdoors
  • the amount of on-site construction should be reduced
  • a highly pre-assembled delivery is preferred.

Multiple Walter power plants in one system

For larger energy production requirements, multiple Walter units can be operated in parallel.

For example:

  • 1 Walter: 50 kW electricity / 120 kW heat
  • 2 Walters: 100 kW electricity / 240 kW heat
  • 5 Walters: 250 kW electricity / 600 kW heat
  • 10 Walters: 500 kW electricity / 1.2 MW heat

The final number of power plant units is always determined based on the site’s actual electricity and heat demand.

For larger systems, Volter also offers Volt Factory and Microgrid solutions.

Walter as Part of a Microgrid Energy Solution

Walter power plants can be integrated into a Volter Microgrid solution, where local electricity and heat production, energy storage systems and other forms of energy generation operate as one integrated system.

A Microgrid enables flexible scaling of energy production and allows different generation technologies, such as solar, wind and hydropower, to be combined alongside Walter power plants.

How does Walter work?

In Walter, wood chips are converted into wood gas through a gasification process.

The wood gas is fed into a gas engine, which drives a generator to produce electricity. At the same time, the heat generated in the process is recovered as hot water.

The process can be summarised as:

Wood chips → wood gas → gas engine → generator → electricity + heat

A more detailed description of the gasification process, gas treatment and electricity generation is available on the technology page.

Automatic control and remote monitoring

Walter’s automation system monitors power plant operation and controls the process based on measurement data.

The system includes:

  • ABB programmable logic controller
  • touchscreen
  • GSM alarms
  • internet connection
  • remote monitoring
  • remote control.

The power plant can be monitored from a computer or mobile device. Remote access can also be used for technical support and maintenance.

Volter Space

Volter Space brings the power plant processes into a cloud-based remote monitoring environment. The service allows users to monitor plant operation and review process data without having to be continuously present on site.

Delivery and commissioning

Walter is delivered tested and ready for installation at the site.

Volter supports the commissioning process and provides training for the personnel operating the power plant.

The standard model is installed indoors. If a suitable building is not available, Walter WP provides an alternative designed for outdoor installation.
